Here’s how the Cardinals’ end-of-season press conference should go
Owner Bill DeWitt Jr. should do most of the talking, and here’s what he should say
Unlike last year – when such a public accounting was truly needed – the Cardinals will reportedly be holding an end-of-season press conference, possibly as soon as Monday. Given the struggles since the start of the 2023 season and the pivotal decisions in the offing, it figures to be as illuminating as such a partly staged-managed thing can be. The near-term and perhaps long-term direction of the franchise will at least be hinted at, and that’s far more important than any kind of 2024 seasonal autopsy. Cardinals fans have a lot of questions, and something resembling answers should be coming out of this. That brings us to the premise of this episode of Birdy Work.
If you’ll indulge me, I’m going to costume myself in my Bill DeWitt Jr. breeches and imagine what opening remarks I’d like to hear from the club’s lead owner and chairman at the end-of-season presser – assuming he’s there and assuming he deigns to rock the mic. To be sure, if DeWitt Jr. does indeed offer up prepared remarks, they will absolutely not resemble what’s to come. Yes, this is idle daydreaming on my part, but it’s also what I think DeWitt should say when it’s time to say things. So then, let’s commence with this exercise in dreamed-up wish-casting, which will be presented in state-of-art italics …
